Wealthsimple Qualifying Deposit: What Counts Toward the $25 Referral Bonus

A qualifying Wealthsimple deposit is $100 or more in Net Deposits from outside Wealthsimple, received within 30 days after the referral relationship is established. Internal transfers don't count, Wealthsimple bonuses don't count, and the referrer must hold $100+ at the moment the friend funds. If any one of those three conditions fails, the $25 bonus does not pay — even if $100 visibly moved.

Key facts

The 30-day clock: what it actually runs from

The terms call it the Funding Period: it begins on the date of Referral Relationship Establishment and lasts 30 days, ending at 11:59 pm ET. The relationship is established in one of two ways:

  1. The friend signs up with Wealthsimple for the first time through the referrer's link.
  2. The friend applies the referrer's code in the app within 7 days of funding a Wealthsimple account for the first time.

Two consequences catch people out. First, the clock does not run from the day the friend opened an account in general — it runs from the referral event. Second, if the friend funded for the first time within 7 days before entering the code, the Funding Period starts 7 days before the code was entered and still lasts 30 days after the relationship was established. Funding from just before the code entry can therefore count — but funding from earlier cannot.

The other half of the clock is receipt, not initiation: funds must be received by Wealthsimple within those 30 days. A transfer started on day 28 that settles on day 32 does not qualify. Start transfers early enough that they land inside the window.

What counts and what doesn't

Counts toward the $100Does NOT count
Deposit from a linked external bank accountMoving money between your own Wealthsimple accounts
Qualified institutional transfer (e.g. TFSA, RRSP, or non-registered account from another institution)Peer-to-peer transfers inside Wealthsimple
External crypto transferWealthsimple bonuses or promotional credits
Deposit from an existing account at a different investment institutionDeposits or transfers from Wealthsimple affiliates

The rule behind the table is one sentence: only external funding events qualify. Anything that originates inside the Wealthsimple ecosystem is excluded, and so is anything from an affiliate. If the money did not come from outside, it does not move the total.

The net calculation, with examples

Net Deposits is not "the largest deposit you made." It is qualifying funding in, minus withdrawals and transferred margin debit balances out, measured over the Funding Period.

One more thing the formula implies: the terms do not list investment growth as counting toward Net Deposits. They count funding events only — money you put in, minus money you took out — so don't rely on a rising portfolio to push you over $100.

The referrer's $100: measured at one moment

The referrer's condition is easy to misread as "has $100 at some point." It is not. The referrer must have a funded eligible account with $100 or more in Net Deposits at the time the referee funds — the same external-only Net Deposits definition, and all of the referrer's accounts must be in good standing. A referrer who qualified last month and withdrew everything last week fails. A referrer who tops back up before the friend funds passes. If you are the sharer, check your balance on the day your friend funds, not the day you shared the link.

For joint accounts, RESPs, and spousal RRSPs, the primary account holder must be the one registered for the promotion; transfers, deposits, and withdrawals by either holder count toward the primary holder's qualifying funding, and the bonus goes to the primary holder only.

Where the $25 lands, briefly

The bonus is $25 to each side, paid to each person's Chequing account within 24 hours after the qualifying funding is completed and processed. No Chequing account means a 90-day window to open one after the first notification, after which the bonus expires and is forfeited. The bonus itself must stay in Wealthsimple accounts for 180 days from the day it is applied, or it may be deducted from a final withdrawal or otherwise recovered.
